Things I love about Indonesia

Masjid Agung, Semarang Well, after so much time of silence I decided once again to write my blog. It's almost six months I'm in Indonesia. To be more precise - in Java island. Six months of volunteering in the Indonesia International Work Camp (IIWC) ( http://iiwcindonesia.wordpress.com/ ). And because only two months are left, I do not feel like writing an official report about what I was doing, or trying to remember these past six months as clearly as I can. Because only two months are left, I am starting to feel nostalgic and I am starting  to mentally collect things with which I fell in love in Indonesia. Things that I'm gonna miss when I'm back. So instead of the report, story, or picture presentation, I'm composing a list of things. Things, I'm not sure I can live without anymore but I have to. The order of things are not important. 1. The sound of adhan . For those who do not know what "adhan" means ...

Indonesia. Beginnings: from small details to swimming with crocodiles

It's not one month when the plane landed in Djakarta and my legs touched the land of Indonesia , but it seems that I'm here for so much longer. Anyways, let's start from the beginnings... The moment you go outside of the airport, the sensation of heat wraps your body and it does not let it go. Ever. It is never cool here. It's always hot and humid. I'm sitting in the room with no direct sunlight, at my, now, home in Semarang with an air condition blowing artificial wind towards me. And I'm still hot. All I want to do is lie somewhere and do not move... Well, this is not an option right now. In spite of the heat, I'm enjoying myself in Indonesia immensely. So many things are different here that I get excited about even the small details. So, some impressions... Insects, reptiles and others. Lizards everywhere: on the ceilings in the warungs (small eating places), at home, in the toilets. Cockroaches? Of course, huge ones. Frogs in the houses...

Why I'm in Indonesia?

Ok, let me start from the very beginning. I'm here, in Indonesia , and I'm gonna stay here till the 1st of December, 2014. So I have seven months ahead of me. I'm here because I applied for the EVS (European Voluntary Service) program "The Other Way". (You can read about it here: http://www.bevolunteer.net/evs-project-other-way ) The name of my project is "Youth Volunteers: Agents of Change toward World Peace". The main goal of this project is to make documentaries about local voluntary service, their challenges and achievements. During this project I'll visit 7 project sites of the organization Indonesia International Work Camp ( http://iiwcindonesia.wordpress.com/ ) in Java island, and make short documentaries about them. But I'll write about it in more detail a little bit later.  Near Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah, Semarang

Indonesia: getting there

On the 8th of April 6.50 I had to leave Vilnius airport for Indonesia (route: Vilnius - Copenhagen-Doda-Jakarta-Semarang). It did not go as smoothly as planned. We checked in, almost made it to the plane that had to fly to Copenhagen, but we were stopped on the steps of the plane. Then the pilot showed up and said that unfortunately this plane is not gonna leave as planned. So, our tickets were changed (a long procedure of waiting) to the route: Vilnius-Frankfurt-Singapore-Jakarta-Semarang. There is a catch. We had to wait in Vilnius airport for 9 hours for our next plane (to Frankfurt). Which is maybe not too bad for me, as I had to finish my review of the movie "Her", but I was really really tired as the night before I had slept only for 1 hour. Anyways, the trip to Frankfurt went smootly. After few hours at the airport, we cought a plane to Singapore which lasted for 12 hours. There we boarded a plane, but it was late to take a flight for 40 minutes. So, at the end, we ...

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
